Recently, a dive performed as part of the NOAA’s Okeanos Explorer mission confirmed that underwater volcanic activity occurred in the Daikoku Seamount. Experts have suspected that underwater volcanic activity had occurred not long ago near the Mariana Islands.  Recently, a dive performed by the crew of NOAA’s Okeanos Explorer confirmed that there had, indeed, been such an event.  Footage captured of the area, specifically the crater of Daikoku Seamount, shows volcanic smoke is still present, and venting is ongoing.  Streams of what is believed to, in part, be carbon dioxide flow from the openings in crater’s lower wall and rim.  The sulfur-heavy ground has drawn a diverse group of aquatic life.  Video shows the crater is occupied by flat fish, tubeworms, and at ...

About Us: The Ocean Exploration Trust was founded in 2008 by Titanic discoverer Dr. Robert Ballard to engage in pure ocean exploration. Our international programs center on scientific exploration of the seafloor and many of our expeditions are launched from aboard Exploration Vessel (E/V) Nautilus, a 64-meter research vessel operated by the Ocean Exploration Trust. In addition to conducting scientific research, we offer our expeditions to explorers on shore via live video, audio, and data feeds from the field. We also bring educators and students of all ages aboard during E/V Nautilus expeditions, offering them hands-on experience in ocean exploration, research, and communications.
